Corporate India has recorded strong performance in the June quarter, with profit growth for Nifty 50 companies averaging a 10-quarter high of 18%. According to data compiled from five brokerages, the robust numbers have reinforced expectations of sustained corporate growth despite ongoing margin pressures.
Motilal Oswal described the quarter as "picture perfect," noting that profit and revenue growth were strong across large-, mid-, and small-cap segments. Across the broader market, 19 sectors exceeded estimates. The upgrade-to-downgrade ratio improved to 1.5, indicating that 15 companies were upgraded for every 10 downgrades and signaling a positive profit outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year.
Large-cap firms led the earnings beat on the Nifty 50 index, with major contributions from companies such as Reliance Industries, Hindalco, JSW Steel, ONGC, and Bharti Airtel, analysts stated.
Sector-wise, banking and financial institutions benefited from faster loan growth, low credit costs, and operating leverage, according to Jefferies. Non-banking financial companies also reported solid growth in assets under management alongside broadly benign asset quality. Meanwhile, the metals sector gained from improved pricing conditions. Retail, jewellery, paints, select internet companies, and consumer staples showed resilient demand supported by premiumisation and price-led growth.
Despite the overall positive trend, oil marketing companies emerged as the primary weak spot, reporting sharp first-quarter losses. Elevated crude prices offset strong refining margins, leaving the earnings of these firms sensitive to crude volatility, fuel-price pass-through, and inventory effects.
Brokerages also pointed to emerging margin pressures across several sectors. Higher input costs—including metals, crude derivatives, palm oil, freight, and rising wages—impacted profitability in industries such as autos, consumer goods, and logistics. Additionally, IT services encountered pricing pressure linked to artificial intelligence developments, while lenders experienced compression in net interest margins.
Looking ahead, brokerages highlighted festive demand, credit expansion, GST-related consumption support, and investment activity as the key drivers expected to underpin earnings for fiscal 2027.
"The 18% profit growth reported by Nifty 50 companies this quarter is a strong indicator of underlying economic resilience, particularly driven by large-cap performers in banking, metals, and consumer segments. However, founders and business leaders must carefully monitor the margin pressures highlighted by brokerages, especially rising input costs and sector-specific headwinds like those seen in IT and oil marketing. Sustainable long-term planning will require businesses to navigate these cost dynamics effectively while capitalizing on consumption support and credit expansion." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
