State Bank of India and SBI Capital Markets plan to dilute a combined stake of up to 1 per cent in the National Stock Exchange through its upcoming ₹30,000-crore initial public offering. Meanwhile, SBI's housing finance portfolio is on track to cross the ₹10 lakh crore milestone in the current quarter.

State Bank of India (SBI) and its subsidiary, SBI Capital Markets Ltd, plan to dilute up to a 1 per cent combined stake in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) as part of the stock exchange's proposed ₹30,000-crore initial public offering (IPO).

According to SBI Chairman C S Setty, the bank is participating in the divestment process. SBI proposes to divest a 0.65 per cent stake, while SBI Capital Markets plans to dilute a 0.35 per cent stake, bringing the total reduction to approximately 1 per cent for the SBI group. The final percentage could vary depending on the participation of other shareholders.

Currently, SBI holds a 3.23 per cent stake in the NSE, whereas SBI Capital Markets owns 4.33 per cent in India's largest stock exchange. Setty also clarified that the bank has no immediate plans to monetise holdings in other subsidiaries.

In a separate update regarding the bank's core operations, SBI's mortgage portfolio is projected to cross the significant milestone of ₹10 lakh crore in the current quarter, driven by steady demand. The country's largest lender previously crossed the ₹9 lakh crore home loan portfolio mark during the last financial year.

SBI currently maintains a market share of nearly 28 per cent in the home loan segment. The bank operates more than 460 home loan processing centres across India to enhance product accessibility. Setty attributed the ongoing growth to customer trust in the bank's operational processes, pricing transparency, and thorough due diligence regarding builders and documentation.

Furthermore, the bank views housing finance as a crucial driver of broader economic activity rather than a standalone banking product. Setty noted the multiplier effect that residential and commercial real estate has on more than 200 allied industries, positioning home loans as an integral component of India's overall economic growth.

"The planned stake dilution by SBI and SBI Capital Markets in the upcoming NSE IPO reflects a strategic capital-allocation approach by the public sector banking major. By monetising a portion of its non-core equity holdings, the bank can optimize its asset portfolio while continuing to focus on core expansion areas like its retail mortgage business, which is nearing the major milestone of ₹10 lakh crore. This demonstrates balanced financial stewardship and highlights the deep interconnectedness between institutional investments and broader economic growth." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
