The Bitcoin stolen during the recent security breach on the cryptocurrency exchange Binance will likely be impossible to recover, according to Bobby Lee, founder of digital-asset hardware wallet company Ballet Global Inc.
In a recent interview, Lee stated that the lost Bitcoin is now in the hands of the hackers. Binance, recognized as the world's largest crypto exchange, estimated that the heist impacted assets valued at $6.3 billion. In response to the incident, the exchange temporarily suspended all deposits and withdrawals, while also pledging to cover any user losses.
Binance reported that approximately $3 billion of the impacted assets have been frozen so far. However, Lee noted that freezing assets is distinct from actual recovery. He added that Binance faces a lengthy process involving law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident and formally claim the frozen funds. According to Lee, only stablecoins stand a realistic chance of being recovered.
Despite the massive scale of the incident, the broader market reaction remained relatively muted. Bitcoin avoided a pronounced selloff during Asian trading, falling less than 1 percent to trade at $78,269 in Hong Kong. Lee remarked that unlike in prior years when similar hacks could trigger major market plunges, the crypto market has matured significantly.
Putting the incident into perspective, Lee noted that the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem spans trillions of dollars in value, making a multi-billion dollar loss manageable for the overall market structure.
"Incidents of this scale highlight the critical need for robust cybersecurity infrastructure and proactive risk management in the digital asset space. While exchanges play a vital role in market liquidity, large-scale breaches demonstrate that asset custody and security protocols must continuously evolve. The relatively stable market reaction indicates a maturing investor base, but operational resilience remains non-negotiable for platforms handling billions in assets." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
