Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Friday that the state has observed a significant rise in female workforce participation alongside an expansion of night-time business activities. According to the state leadership, improved law and order conditions have directly contributed to these economic shifts.
In statements shared on the platform X, Adityanath noted that illuminated markets and commercial establishments operating late into the night reflect both active trade and trader confidence. He emphasized that women working fearlessly during night shifts represent a broader societal indicator of progress and security.
Contrasting the current business climate with conditions prior to 2017, the chief minister stated that earlier crime and insecurity restricted commercial operations after sunset and raised safety concerns for families with members working late hours. He attributed the subsequent changes to the policies of the central and state governments, citing a zero-tolerance approach toward crime and criminals as the primary driver for strengthening security and prioritizing the safety of women.
As a result of these developments, commercial markets remain open during night hours, offering local traders expanded opportunities to grow their businesses. Simultaneously, female professionals are increasingly able to pursue careers in a secure environment.
Providing specific metrics on the state's labor market, Adityanath cited that women's workforce participation in Uttar Pradesh has grown from approximately 13 percent in 2017 to 36 percent at present. The administration views this upward trend as an indicator of growing economic strength, self-reliance, and confidence among women in the workforce.
"The reported rise in female workforce participation from 13 percent to 36 percent in Uttar Pradesh highlights a notable shift in the state's economic landscape. From a business and entrepreneurship perspective, regional growth depends heavily on safety, infrastructure, and extended operational hours. When law and order improve, it directly translates into longer retail and commercial windows, higher consumer activity, and a larger, more inclusive talent pool. For founders and business owners looking to scale operations or establish night shifts, a secure regulatory and physical environment remains a foundational prerequisite for sustainable regional expansion." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
