Suparna Mitra, Managing Director and CEO of TeamLease, recently shared insights regarding her career transition from Titan to the HR services and staffing sector. In a wide-ranging discussion, she highlighted the evolving scale of TeamLease, emerging labor market trends, and her extensive background in consumer-facing businesses.

Suparna Mitra, Managing Director and CEO of TeamLease, recently reflected on her career transition from a long tenure at Titan to the B2B staffing and HR services sector. Speaking about her move into the industry, Mitra noted the distinct rhythm of the staffing business compared to her decades-long career in consumer goods and retail.

TeamLease manages a massive workforce of 3.5 lakh people, with 2,500 working internally and the rest deployed across various client organizations. The company handles payroll, compliance, provident fund, gratuity, and recruitment services. In FY 25-26, TeamLease registered revenues of ₹11,860 crore while serving a client base exceeding 4,000 companies across sectors such as automotive, BFSI, manufacturing, logistics, e-commerce, and quick commerce.

The company's operations span general staffing—which accounts for a large portion of entry-level sales and retail positions—as well as specialized staffing covering IT, finance, legal, and support for over 120 Global Capability Centres (GCCs). With hiring volumes averaging around 20,000 people per month, TeamLease relies on extensive backend operations and automated systems supported by manual verification to process complex compliance documents.

Addressing modern labor trends, Mitra observed a growing preference for flexibility among both employers and employees. While previous generations typically remained with a single company or industry for decades, younger workers increasingly pursue multi-career paths across multiple decades. This shift provides workers with varied learning opportunities and revenue streams, while offering employers scalable staffing solutions outside of core organizational functions.

Before joining TeamLease, Mitra spent significant parts of her career at Titan Company, where she worked closely with leadership figures including founder Xerxes Desai and former Managing Director Bhaskar Bhat. During her tenure, she oversaw various brand launches, regional business operations, and eventually served as CEO of the watches division starting in April 2020. Her leadership at Titan included steering the watches division through the pandemic and driving premiumisation efforts, culminating in the launch of high-end timepieces like the limited-edition Jalsa watch featuring an in-house tourbillon movement.

Looking ahead at her agenda for TeamLease, Mitra aims to unify the narrative across the company's independent verticals to ensure clients fully understand the breadth of people solutions available. Her educational background includes an electrical engineering degree from Jadavpur University followed by a management degree from IIM-Calcutta, which preceded her early career stints with Hindustan Unilever (Brooke Bond) and Arvind Brands.

"Transitioning from a B2C retail giant like Titan to a large-scale B2B human resources and staffing firm like TeamLease represents a fascinating leadership shift. Suparna Mitra's experience underscores the growing convergence between traditional corporate management and flexible workforce solutions in India. As companies across sectors increasingly rely on specialized staffing and compliant payroll management to navigate market dynamics, leadership strategies that bridge consumer-centric execution with operational scale will become crucial for sustainable growth." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
