Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Chair 31st Southern Zonal Council Meeting in Mahabalipuram

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to chair the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council (SZC) in Mahabalipuram, near Chennai, on Thursday. According to a government statement, the Council provides a formal forum for resolving issues between the Centre and member states or union territories, while also working to advance collaborative measures between the parties.

The Southern Zonal Council comprises five states—Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala (noted in source as Keralam), Tamil Nadu, and Telangana—along with three Union Territories: Puducherry, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep.

While Union Minister Shah serves as the Chairman of the Southern Zonal Council, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay, acts as the Vice-Chairman. The Chief Ministers of the member states serve as the Vice-Chairman of the Council on a rotational basis.

The upcoming meeting will see participation from the Chief Ministers, Lieutenant Governors, and Administrators of the member states and union territories in the southern region, accompanied by two senior ministers from each state. Additionally, Chief Secretaries, advisors, and other senior state government officials, alongside senior officers from the Central Government, are scheduled to participate.

The Zonal Council functions through a structured process that includes a standing committee constituted at the level of Chief Secretaries. Issues proposed by the states are initially submitted for discussion before this committee. Following deliberations at that level, remaining issues are placed before the full Zonal Council meeting for formal consideration.

Discussions at these council meetings typically cover broad issues of national importance. These include the implementation of Fast Track Special Courts aimed at ensuring the speedy investigation and early disposal of cases involving rape against women and children, as well as matters related to education.

In addition to national priorities, the agenda covers various regional issues of common interest. These include matters connected to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, important water-sharing projects, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), civil aviation concerns, and several other regional topics outlined in the government statement.
