Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting announced its entry into India's pet food market on Wednesday with the launch of a new nutrition brand named Snuggles. This move marks the company's first step into the domestic pet food sector, which is currently estimated to be valued at over ₹5,500 crore.
The initial product offering from Snuggles is dry dog food that combines standard kibble with freeze-dried chicken chunks. According to Anil Chugh, President of the Foods Business and Chief Operating Officer of New Business at Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting-India, the formulations utilize human-grade ingredients. The brand aims to deliver a combination of nutrition and taste at an accessible price point.
Commenting on the strategic expansion, Anil Chugh said, "As pet parenting continues to evolve, we see a significant opportunity to offer superior nutrition, trusted ingredients and meaningful innovation at a price point that delivers outstanding value to our customers. Backed by Wipro's strengths in sales, distribution and brand-building capabilities, our ambition is to make Snuggles the most loved pet food brand in India."
The initial portfolio of Snuggles comprises three distinct variants designed to cater to different life stages and breeds: Puppy All Breeds, Adult Small Breed, and Adult Medium and Large Breed.
Regarding product development, the formulations were created in collaboration with a team of qualified veterinarians. The company stated that the products underwent extensive evaluation at innovation facilities and across diverse Indian geographies to assess their nutrition, palatability, and overall quality.
In terms of market reach, Snuggles will be distributed through multiple channels. These include specialty pet retail stores, veterinary clinics, modern trade outlets, e-commerce websites, and quick-commerce platforms.
"Wipro's entry into the pet food market reflects a clear recognition of the growing pet parenting trend in India. By leveraging its established distribution networks and partnering with veterinarians for product formulation, the company is positioning itself to capture a share of a rapidly expanding consumer segment. For large consumer goods players, diversifying into specialized categories like pet care represents a logical growth path, provided they can effectively navigate distribution across both digital and physical retail channels." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
