Bitcoin retreated below the $80,000 mark on Monday following a wider risk-off market sentiment ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting. The decline coincided with a recent withdrawal of capital from US-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds and ongoing concerns regarding heavy investments in the artificial intelligence sector.

Bitcoin retreated below the $80,000 threshold on Monday, driven by a broader risk-off sentiment ahead of an upcoming Federal Reserve meeting and growing concerns surrounding the artificial intelligence trade.

The largest digital asset fell by as much as 1.4 percent, dropping to under $79,300 before paring some losses to trade around $80,000 during afternoon trading in Asia. The downward pressure extended to smaller altcoins as well, with tokens including Ether, XRP, and Solana also recording declines.

The crypto market movement followed a notable reversal in fund flows. Investors pulled $772.4 million from US-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds on Thursday and Friday, marking a sharp shift from more than $1 billion in net inflows recorded earlier in the week.

The crypto losses occurred alongside a wider market slump extending from the previous week. Investors have increasingly questioned massive capital expenditure on artificial intelligence and are awaiting upcoming earnings reports from major technology companies for clarity on the sector's outlook. Asian markets reflected this tension, as South Korea's Kospi Index fell 0.2 percent, and chip-related stocks experienced sharp declines on Japan's Nikkei.

Market analysts noted that digital assets remain tied to broader macroeconomic and technological trends. Caroline Mauron, co-founder of Orbit Markets, stated that Bitcoin had previously shown relative resilience to AI debt concerns weighing on risk assets, but market focus has now shifted toward the Federal Reserve meeting and subsequent US midterm elections.

Pratik Kala, a portfolio manager at Apollo Crypto, explained that Bitcoin continues to be grouped in the risk-off basket for systematic funds and algorithmic traders, leaving it exposed to shifting market sentiment. Kala also highlighted online discussions concerning AI, including comments from SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk regarding potential sector consolidation next year, as factors contributing to overall market strain. Additionally, advancements in artificial intelligence have raised potential security considerations for the crypto space, prompting caution among some investors.

"The recent dip in Bitcoin below $80,000 highlights the growing interconnectedness between digital assets and traditional macroeconomic and technology sectors. When risk-off sentiment takes hold due to upcoming central bank meetings or valuation concerns in major sectors like artificial intelligence, alternative asset classes like cryptocurrencies often experience immediate volatility and capital outflows. Investors and entrepreneurs must monitor these broader market cycles closely, as shifts in institutional liquidity and macroeconomic policy directly impact capital availability across the entire business ecosystem." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
