CHENNAI — Cholamandalam MS General Insurance Company has reported a Gross Written Premium (GWP) of ₹4,517 crore for the half-year ended September 30, 2026. This marks a 7.1 per cent growth compared to the ₹4,217 crore recorded during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
For the second quarter of FY27, the joint venture between the Murugappa Group and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group registered a GWP of ₹2,386 crore, up from ₹2,220 crore in Q2 FY26, according to a company release.
Despite the top-line growth, the company's profitability faced headwinds during the second quarter. Chola MS reported a Profit Before Tax (PBT) of ₹97.56 crore and a Profit After Tax (PAT) of ₹78.29 crore for the entire first half of FY27. However, Q2 FY27 saw a pre-tax loss of ₹19 crore, contrasting with a PBT of ₹121 crore in Q2 FY26.
The company stated that the quarterly loss was driven by a challenging claims environment and natural catastrophe events, including floods in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Assam.
During the first half of the fiscal year, the insurer settled over 3.5 lakh non-crop claims. This was supported by a service network comprising more than 17,800 garages and 15,000 hospitals.
Despite the impact of natural catastrophes on quarterly earnings, Chola MS maintained a strong capital position. The insurer reported a solvency ratio of 1.88 times as of September 30, 2026, remaining well above the regulatory requirement of 1.5 times.
"The financial performance of Cholamandalam MS General Insurance highlights the inherent volatility of the general insurance sector, where top-line expansion can be quickly tested by unforeseen natural catastrophe events. While a 7.1 percent growth in H1 gross written premium demonstrates steady demand, the Q2 pre-tax loss due to floods in multiple states underscores the critical importance of robust risk modeling and adequate reinsurance. Maintaining a solvency ratio of 1.88 times, comfortably above the regulatory threshold, reflects sound capital reserves that are essential to absorb unexpected claims and sustain long-term consumer trust." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
