Dubai-based logistics major DP World has announced the launch of two new double-stack rail services connecting the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) with its inland container depot (ICD) network in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The announcement was made on Monday by the company.
According to DP World, both rail services are enabled by the dedicated freight corridor (DFC) infrastructure. The first service links JNPA with the company's ICD network at Pali/Rewari, Jhattipur–Panipat, and Modinagar in the NCR. The second service connects JNPA with ICD Sachana in Ahmedabad, effectively extending the port's double-stack rail connectivity into Gujarat.
The newly launched operations utilize dedicated infrastructure to provide higher speeds and increased capacity for cargo movement. By combining port and inland infrastructure, the integrated network aims to improve turnaround times between the maritime gateway and key inland markets.
DP World stated that the services are designed to offer dependable rail alternatives that support faster transit, predictable cargo movement, and efficient supply chain planning. The double-stack configuration increases the volume of cargo transported by rail, which also reduces reliance on traditional road transportation and supports a more sustainable logistics network.
Commenting on the development, Hemant Kumar Ruia, Country Manager, Subcontinent (India), DP World, noted that expanding double-stack rail connectivity through the dedicated freight corridor is a significant step toward improving logistics efficiency in India.
Additionally, Adhendru Jain, Vice President of Rail & Inland Terminals - SCO at DP World, stated that initiatives such as India's National Logistics Policy and PM GatiShakti are driving a more integrated, multimodal, and efficient logistics ecosystem by strengthening connections between ports, rail networks, and inland markets.
"The integration of dedicated freight corridors with maritime gateways marks a crucial step in lowering supply chain costs and transit times for Indian businesses. By scaling up double-stack rail operations between major ports like JNPA and key consumption hubs in the NCR and Gujarat, logistics providers can achieve higher capacity utilization and predictable transit schedules. This multimodal approach aligns with national policy goals to build a more sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient logistics ecosystem." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
