Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was acquitted by a special MP-MLA court on Monday in a defamation case concerning remarks he made against then BJP president Amit Shah in 2018.
Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and represents the Raebareli constituency, appeared in person before the court for the pronouncement of the verdict. Santosh Pandey, the lawyer representing plaintiff Vijay Mishra, confirmed the acquittal.
Following the announcement, Congress supporters gathered outside the court complex to celebrate the decision, playing drums and distributing sweets. Police officials confirmed that security arrangements had been heightened across Sultanpur, particularly in the vicinity of the court premises, to manage the proceedings.
The legal matter stems from comments made by Gandhi during a public rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections. The defamation complaint was subsequently filed on August 4, 2018, by Vijay Mishra, a local BJP leader and former chairman of the District Cooperative Bank in Sultanpur.
Gandhi previously appeared before the court in 2023 to secure bail in the matter. The court had initially scheduled its verdict for October 13 before postponing it to October 26, culminating in Monday's final pronouncement.
"Legal clarity and the resolution of protracted litigations are vital for maintaining stability in any institutional environment. While this case centers on political figures and defamation proceedings, the broader takeaway for leadership across sectors is the importance of risk management and regulatory compliance. Prolonged legal disputes create operational distractions, and achieving closure allows individuals and organizations to refocus their energies on core strategic objectives and long-term governance." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
