The Indian Malt Whisky Association and the Scotch Whisky Association have signed a cooperation agreement focusing on sustainability, product authenticity, and regulatory engagement. The pact aligns with the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, which reduces import duties on Scotch whisky and opens potential opportunities for Indian single malts in the UK.

NEW DELHI — The Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) and the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) have signed a cooperation agreement to work together on sustainability, regulatory matters, and the promotion of their respective products.

According to a joint statement, the partnership also covers legal protection, product authenticity, the handling of intellectual property infringements, and the promotion of responsible consumption.

The agreement follows the implementation of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on July 15, 2026. The trade pact reduces import duties on Scotch whisky in India from 150 per cent to 75 per cent, with a phased reduction scheduled to reach 40 per cent over the next decade. Industry participants expect the tariff changes to boost Scotch whisky sales in the Indian market.

At the same time, the trade pact could create opportunities for Indian single malt whiskies to enter the UK market. Several Indian brands have previously received international recognition for their quality and craftsmanship.

The joint statement noted that the FTA opens new avenues for bilateral trade, and that closer engagement between industry bodies will help strengthen dialogue, facilitate knowledge exchange, and support businesses navigating opportunities in both markets.

Data from the Scotland-based SWA shows that India was the world's largest export market for Scotch whisky by volume in 2025, with exports equivalent to more than 220 million bottles. Volumes shipped to India have doubled over the past decade.

Maj Gen Rajesh Chopra, Director General of the IMWA, stated that the agreement marks an important milestone in the evolution of India's malt whisky industry and its engagement with established global whisky traditions.

Established in July 2024 as a not-for-profit industry body, the IMWA represents Indian malt whisky producers and works to promote quality, authenticity, and standardisation within the sector.

"This cooperation agreement between the Indian Malt Whisky and Scotch Whisky associations reflects the growing maturity of cross-border trade in the beverage sector. With the implementation of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement and reduced import duties, producers on both sides gain a structured framework to address regulatory matters, intellectual property, and market expansion. For Indian single malt brands, engaging with established global bodies presents a valuable opportunity to benchmark quality and navigate international markets effectively." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
