Tata Communications, a provider of enterprise data connections and cybersecurity services, announced an investment of nearly $450 million on Monday to develop high-speed network cables connecting India's artificial intelligence data-centre corridors.
As part of the initiative, the company will construct approximately 10,000 km of new long-haul fibre cables across India. The project aims to connect cloud services firms, global capability centres, and other organizations such as banks directly to key data-centre clusters.
The network expansion is planned to roll out in three phases. The deployment will cover the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor, as well as the east coast and western India data-centre ecosystems, which include Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, and GIFT City.
This major capital allocation highlights the growing physical infrastructure requirements driven by enterprise demand for high-capacity data connectivity and AI capabilities within the Indian market.
"This substantial investment by Tata Communications highlights the critical role physical infrastructure plays in supporting India's growing digital economy. As data consumption and artificial intelligence initiatives scale rapidly across enterprises and global capability centres, high-speed fibre connectivity forms the foundational backbone required to handle heavy workloads reliably. Such capital deployment into domestic network corridors ensures that emerging technology hubs and established business centres remain well-connected." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
