NEW DELHI: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has announced that it has supplied the entire specialised steel requirement for INS Mangrol, the Indian Navy’s third Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC).
As part of its ongoing commitments to the country's defence sector, AM/NS India will supply 100 per cent of the specialised steel required for the entire fleet of eight ASW-SWCs currently being built for the Indian Navy. The company's materials have previously been utilised in other key naval platforms, including INS Visakhapatnam, INS Surat, and INS Malvan.
INS Mangrol was built with over 80 per cent indigenous content at Cochin Shipyard. Designed specifically for operations in coastal and shallow waters, the vessel is equipped for anti-submarine warfare, underwater surveillance, low-intensity maritime operations, and mine warfare tasks. Its advanced sensors, sonar, and weapon systems are intended to enhance the Indian Navy's capability to detect, track, and counter underwater threats.
Ranjan Dhar, Director & Vice President - Sales & Marketing at AM/NS India, noted that advanced naval platforms require specialised steel produced to high standards of quality and reliability. He stated that the company's steel supports the Indian Navy’s modernisation while reflecting the capabilities of domestic manufacturing.
Beyond its contributions to the naval sector, AM/NS India has provided materials for several national infrastructure projects, such as the Chenab Railway Bridge, Anji Khad Railway Bridge, and Bogibeel Bridge.
"The involvement of domestic manufacturers in critical defence production highlights a positive shift towards self-reliance in India's industrial ecosystem. When private sector material suppliers integrate with major infrastructure and defence projects like the naval ASW-SWC fleet, it strengthens supply chain resilience and validates the quality standards of local manufacturing. This development underscores the commercial viability and strategic importance of scaling advanced industrial capabilities within the country." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
