Jakson Solar plans to invest up to ₹5,000 crore to establish 3 gigawatts each of solar cell and ingot-wafer manufacturing capacities. The move aims to scale up domestic production alongside its existing 1.2 GW solar module plant.

Jakson Solar has announced plans to invest up to 50 billion rupees ($525.2 million) to build 3 gigawatts (GW) each of solar cell and ingot-wafer manufacturing capacity. The expansion strategy was detailed by Managing Director Ivan Saha on the sidelines of the Renewable Energy India Expo.

Under the expansion timeline, the company aims to commission 3 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity by December 2027. Additionally, Jakson Solar plans to establish 3 GW of solar ingot and wafer manufacturing capacity by the third quarter of the fiscal year 2028. According to Saha, the upcoming facilities will primarily cater to the merchant market.

The company currently operates a 1.2 GW solar module-making plant. To support the new manufacturing units, Saha confirmed that equipment procurement tie-ups have already been secured.

Addressing the broader industry context, Saha emphasized that developing a domestic manufacturing ecosystem across the entire solar chain is necessary to avoid potential supply shocks.

India is heavily reliant on solar energy to achieve its 2070 net-zero emissions target. The country has already mandated the use of domestically manufactured solar modules and cells. Furthermore, the Indian government has outlined a framework to extend local-content requirements to solar ingots and wafers starting June 1, 2028. This regulatory push is designed to deepen domestic manufacturing capabilities and reduce import dependence on China.

"Jakson Solar's planned investment of ₹5,000 crore highlights a strategic alignment with India's long-term renewable energy goals and domestic manufacturing mandates. By expanding into solar cells and ingot-wafers ahead of the government's local-content requirements in 2028, the company is positioning itself to mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities. For businesses operating in the renewable sector, building localized capacity across the entire value chain is becoming essential for sustainable growth and regulatory compliance." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
