Shares of HDFC Bank declined further on Monday, falling 0.71 per cent to trade at ₹687.90 on the National Stock Exchange by 12:15 pm. The drop extends a week-long slide for the stock as Anup Bagchi formally assumed office as the new chief executive officer, succeeding Sashidhar Jagdishan, who steps down after a six-year tenure.
Selling pressure dominated trading activity during the session. Sellers accounted for 55.32 per cent of the total quantity traded, compared to 44.68 per cent for buyers. Traded volume reached 115.52 lakh shares, representing a total value of ₹797.01 crore. With this latest decline, the stock is trading just ₹6 above its 52-week low of ₹681.90. Year-to-date, the bank's shares have shed nearly 31 per cent, while the Nifty 50 has declined by 13.59 per cent over the same period. The bank's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has compressed to 13.34, with the adjusted figure at 13.15. Total market capitalisation stood at ₹10,60,502.56 crore.
Bagchi takes charge during a challenging operational and structural period for the institution. An internal probe into the alleged disclosure of confidential information by two senior executives remains active and unresolved. Additionally, leadership transitions continue to unfold, with Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha scheduled to exit the bank by December.
Broader market headwinds added to the pressure on Monday. The Bank Nifty opened below its previous close near 54,250 and subsequently broke below the 54,000 threshold. Technical indicators reflect continued selling momentum, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) slipping into the mid-30s. Market analysts note immediate support levels at 53,800 to 53,700, while resistance is identified in the 54,300 to 54,400 range.
"Leadership transitions in large financial institutions often introduce temporary uncertainty, which can be amplified when coupled with internal investigations and broader sectoral pressures. For HDFC Bank, the immediate priority for new leadership will be to stabilize market confidence, address internal governance matters, and ensure operational continuity during this phase of transition." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
