Shares of Equitas Small Finance Bank experienced a sharp decline, collapsing nearly 20 percent to ₹52.11 after the Chennai-based lender announced that its founder and Managing Director & CEO, P. N. Vasudevan, has submitted his resignation.
The announcement overshadowed the bank's financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, which featured a record quarterly net profit of ₹218 crore. The stock opened at ₹66, reached a high of ₹69.70, and ultimately fell to its lower circuit band by mid-afternoon, erasing approximately ₹1,500 crore in market capitalisation. Trading activity was heavy, with volumes surging to 655 lakh shares.
Vasudevan, who has led the institution since its origins as a microfinance entity in 2007 and its subsequent transition into a Small Finance Bank in 2016, stated in his resignation letter to Part-Time Chairman Anil Kumar Sharma that he is stepping down to clear a perception overhang related to a potential conflict of interest. His daughter serves as a co-promoter of an NBFC that secured an RBI licence in 2023. While Vasudevan noted that no financial transactions took place between the bank and the NBFC—aside from a short-term deposit from roughly two and a half years ago that was repaid at maturity—he acknowledged that investor concerns surrounding the perceived conflict negatively impacted the stock.
During its meeting on October 29, 2026, the Board of Directors acknowledged and accepted the resignation. Vasudevan will continue to serve as MD & CEO until a successor is appointed. The Board has tasked the Nomination and Remuneration Committee with identifying potential candidates from both internal and external pools, with any final appointment subject to approval from the Reserve Bank of India.
Financially, the lender posted strong growth for the half-year ended September 30, 2026, recording a net profit of ₹401.6 crore compared to a net loss of ₹199.6 crore during the same period in the previous year. Total income for the quarter advanced to ₹2,357.5 crore from ₹1,846.3 crore year-on-year. Asset quality also showed improvement, with the gross NPA ratio decreasing to 2.29 percent from 2.92 percent a year earlier, while total business surpassed ₹1 lakh crore during the quarter.
Additionally, the Board approved the re-appointment of Anil Kumar Sharma as Part-Time Chairman for a three-year term beginning April 25, 2027. The Board also sanctioned the relocation of the bank's registered office to Equitas Towers, Little Mount, Saidapet, Chennai, effective October 30, 2026.
"This event highlights how corporate governance and leadership perceptions directly impact market valuations, even when a company delivers record financial performance. When founders or CEOs step down due to perceived conflicts of interest, it creates immediate uncertainty among investors. For financial institutions and regulated entities, maintaining transparent boundaries between personal affiliations and corporate operations is critical to sustaining long-term market confidence and stock stability." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
