India and Japan Sign Memorandum on Maritime Security Cooperation

India and Japan have formalized a new agreement to strengthen maritime security cooperation between the two nations. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Japanese counterpart, Shinjiro Koizumi, met at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on Thursday to sign the Memorandum of Arrangement on Maritime Security Cooperation.

The newly signed memorandum provides a framework for advancing cooperation in maritime security between the Ministry of Defence of India and the Ministry of Defence of Japan. Key elements of the agreement include strengthening cooperation between the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force, alongside improved information sharing in Maritime Domain Awareness.

Additionally, the agreement facilitates enhanced cooperation in areas such as Search and Rescue and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief. Both ministers noted that these steps align with the ongoing Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership, which supports peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

To protect sea lines of communication, both sides agreed to coordinate further through mutual visits by naval units and ships, joint exercises, subject matter expert exchanges, and personnel training. The framework also encompasses logistical support, including the utilization of ports, maintenance, and repair facilities.

During the bilateral meeting, Minister Koizumi referenced the changing security environment in the Indo-Pacific and emphasized the need to elevate defense ties between New Delhi and Tokyo. He recalled his 2018 visit to India and noted the Lok Sabha's tradition of observing Hiroshima Day on August 6 to honor victims of the 1945 atomic bombings.

This defense meeting follows Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's three-day official visit to New Delhi from July 1 to July 3, 2026, which marked her first bilateral trip to India since taking office. During the 16th Annual Summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi, both leaders agreed to expand defense and security cooperation, alongside commitments targeting 10 trillion yen in Japanese investments over the next decade.
