India's gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections grew by around 15 percent year-on-year to touch ₹2 lakh crore in August, according to data released on the GST portal on Tuesday. The collections for August correspond to goods consumed and services availed during the month of July.
While the figures indicate strong annual growth compared to the over ₹1.74 lakh crore mopped up in August of the previous year, the collection marks a moderation when compared to the ₹2.11 lakh crore recorded in July.
A detailed breakdown of the August data shows that revenue from domestic transactions rose 9.3 percent to exceed ₹1.37 lakh crore. Meanwhile, revenue from imports increased significantly by 29 percent to reach ₹62,604 crore. The gross Central GST collection stood at ₹38,413 crore, State GST at ₹46,316 crore, and Integrated GST at over ₹1.15 lakh crore during the month.
Refund figures also saw a sharp increase, jumping 68 percent to ₹31,795 crore during August, driven largely by inverted duty structures. Consequently, the net GST collection for the month stood at ₹1.68 lakh crore, marking an 8.3 percent year-on-year growth.
Industry experts noted that the near-₹2 lakh crore gross collection highlights the resilience of manufacturing, investment-led activity, and the formal economy. However, analysts pointed out structural imbalances, noting that import-related GST surged faster than domestic collections, while a sharp rise in domestic refunds moderated headline net revenue gains.
Tax experts have also highlighted that compliance measures, including the statutory time-barring deadline of August 31, contributed to the revenue inflows. With the upcoming festive season, stakeholders expect further movement in GST buoyancy as consumption patterns evolve.
"The steady growth in gross GST collections reaching nearly ₹2 lakh crore in August demonstrates the underlying resilience of India's formal economy and domestic consumption. While import-led revenues and rising refunds highlight ongoing structural nuances that require careful policy navigation, the broader trajectory remains encouraging for businesses and enterprises operating within the ecosystem. As we head into the festive season, monitoring cash flows, compliance timelines, and domestic demand will be crucial for founders and business leaders planning their financial strategies." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
