Indian Navy Monitors Safe Transit of Merchant Vessels Through Bab-el-Mandeb Strait Amid Regional Tensions

A mission-deployed unit of the Indian Navy successfully monitored the safe transit of two merchant vessels, MV Union Mariner and MV Dagher, through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait on August 25. The operation was conducted against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran in the Middle East region.

According to defence establishment sources, Indian Navy warships are actively deployed in the Gulf of Oman as part of Operation Sankalp and are simultaneously carrying out anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden. These deployed warships are assisting Indian merchant vessels to reach their designated destinations safely, reinforcing India's commitment to protecting its maritime interests and ensuring the unhindered flow of vital cargo.

The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait serves as a narrow and strategically crucial sea corridor that links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. Given its critical role in international trade and energy supplies, the security of this waterway is paramount for commercial shipping lanes utilized by Indian vessels.

While official communication regarding evacuation protocols has not been formally released, defence sources noted that deployed naval assets remain available to assist stranded Indian nationals in the region should the need arise.
