Japanese conglomerate Omron inaugurated its first manufacturing facility in India, located in Gummidipoondi near Chennai, on Friday. Built as a dedicated unit for its medical devices arm, Omron Healthcare, the facility currently has an annual capacity of 300,000 blood pressure machines.
According to company executives, Omron plans to expand this capacity to over 3 million units within the first year of operations. The Kyoto-based company had initially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government in 2023, committing a proposed investment of ₹128 crore to set up the unit.
Speaking at the inauguration, Ayumu Okada, President and CEO of Omron Healthcare, noted that establishing a domestic production unit will help the company scale its market share in India, which currently stands at around 40 percent. Omron has been selling medical devices in India since 2010 by importing them from its factory in Vietnam. Company representatives stated that local manufacturing will significantly reduce delivery times from three weeks down to a single day.
The launch coincides with a period of rapid growth in India's medical devices sector, which is being driven by increasing health awareness and supportive domestic policy initiatives. Industry estimates currently value the sector at approximately $12 billion to $15 billion, with projections indicating it could reach $50 billion by 2030. Okada identified India as one of Omron Healthcare’s fastest-growing markets globally, citing the rise in cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses, and diabetes as key factors influencing the country's healthcare needs.
While the facility is currently dedicated to manufacturing blood pressure machines, Omron plans to expand production to include nebulisers and other medical product categories. At present, the output is directed entirely toward the domestic market. However, the company indicated that it intends to export some products to European markets over time, though no specific timeline was provided for the export rollout.
The inauguration event was also attended by Junta Tsujinaga, President and CEO of Omron Corporation, who reiterated the parent company's long-term commitment to the Indian market. Omron, which is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, operates across multiple sectors globally, including industrial automation, healthcare, public infrastructure, and data solutions.
"Omron's decision to establish local manufacturing in Chennai highlights the growing maturity of India's medical devices sector and the strategic importance of the domestic market for global conglomerates. By shifting from imports to local production, the company can drastically reduce supply chain turnaround times from weeks to days while meeting rising healthcare demands. For the broader business ecosystem, localizing manufacturing not only optimizes operational efficiency but also builds a strong foundation for future export capabilities as regulatory and infrastructure frameworks continue to strengthen." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
