Jio Platforms completed its initial public offering (IPO) last week, setting a record as the largest ever IPO in the Indian market at ₹30,213 crore. The offering surpassed Hyundai Motor India’s previous record of ₹27,806 crore.
Shares of Jio Platforms listed at ₹1,358 on both the NSE and the BSE, representing a 21.36 per cent premium over the issue price of ₹1,119. This marked one of the strongest listing gains among mega-IPOs, second only to LG Electronics India, which raised ₹11,607 crore and returned 50 per cent on its debut.
Following the listing, Jio Platforms entered the $100-billion valuation club. The company immediately became the second-most valuable firm in the market, trailing only its parent company, Reliance Industries. This milestone propelled the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance group to the top spot among Indian corporate groups with a combined market capitalization of approximately ₹30 lakh crore, displacing the Tata group, which is valued at about ₹25 lakh crore.
Market analysts have drawn historical comparisons to Reliance Power (RPower), noting that both entities share promoter lineage from the Dhirubhai Ambani family and operate in high-potential sectors. However, market observers point out fundamental differences in valuation and management response.
Jio Platforms was priced at approximately 33 times earnings, whereas RPower's initial valuation exceeded 11,250 times earnings. RPower's stock experienced a sharp reversal on its debut day after an initial brief rise, and the company subsequently announced a bonus issue and lodged regulatory complaints regarding market manipulation—actions that market participants viewed as panic. In contrast, the Reliance Industries management has maintained its composure through recent stock fluctuations.
Additional recent developments surrounding Reliance Industries include a visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to the Jamnagar refinery complex to discuss oil imports, alongside public remarks from global business leaders regarding the competitive landscape in India's telecommunications and satellite internet sectors.
"Jio Platforms' record-breaking IPO highlights the immense liquidity and investor appetite for fundamentally sound, reasonably priced mega-offerings in the Indian market. Unlike past historical precedents where excessive valuations led to severe wealth erosion, Jio's pricing at around 33 times earnings demonstrates a mature approach to capital markets. This successful listing reinforces the strength of India's capital ecosystem and underscores the importance of realistic valuations for long-term shareholder value creation." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
