The Nifty 50 experienced a sharp reversal after opening on a positive note, touching an early intraday high of 22,787 before giving up all gains. The index is currently trading down 0.95 percent at 22,473. Market breadth remains weak, reflected in an advances-to-declines ratio of 5:45.
The intraday outlook for the index leans negative. Market indicators suggest the Nifty could test the 22,400 level during the session, and price action around this threshold will require close observation. A successful bounce from 22,400 could open the door for a relief rally toward 22,500 or 22,600. Conversely, a decisive break below 22,400 increases the risk of the index sliding further toward the 22,200 range.
In the derivatives segment, Nifty 50 October Futures are currently trading at 22,536, having retreated sharply from an intraday peak of 22,853. Immediate support for the October contract is established at 22,490. Market participants are watching to see if the contract can sustain this level.
If the futures contract holds above the 22,490 support and triggers a rebound, it could climb toward the 22,700-22,750 range during the day. However, a breakdown below 22,490 would carry bearish implications, potentially pushing the contract down to 22,350 and lower levels.
Given that the market's next directional move hinges on how it behaves around the 22,490 support level, traders have been advised to remain on the sidelines for the session. Observers suggest waiting for the weekly market close before planning trades for the upcoming week.
"Sharp intraday reversals accompanied by a weak advance-decline ratio clearly indicate prevailing caution in the market. When key support levels like 22,400 for the index and 22,490 for the futures are being tested amid such volatility, capital preservation becomes paramount. For active traders, stepping back and observing how the market closes for the week is a prudent strategy rather than second-guessing near-term price movements." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
