Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the fifth edition of Semicon India on September 17 in New Delhi. The three-day event, scheduled from September 17 to 19, is being organised under the theme 'Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem', according to S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Krishnan noted that the inauguration would reiterate the government's commitment to the semiconductor sector. The event coincides with a period of accelerated growth for India's semiconductor push under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and the Semicon India programme, which is currently in its second stage.
Government officials stated that 12 projects have been approved under ISM 1.0, with three already in commercial production and two or three more expected to follow suit by the end of the calendar year. Additionally, the Cabinet has recently approved ISM 2.0 to accelerate the development of a resilient semiconductor ecosystem.
Amitesh Kumar Sinha, Additional Secretary at MeitY and CEO of ISM, announced during a curtain-raiser briefing that a roundtable chaired by the Prime Minister and attended by global CEOs will take place a day prior to the official inauguration. While MeitY officials did not disclose specific names of participating global executives, they confirmed that delegations from countries including Japan, Korea, Singapore, Germany, and the Netherlands are expected to attend.
The United States is also expected to participate in the event. India formally joined the US-led 'Pax Silica' coalition for resilient supply chains during the AI Impact Summit in February this year, marking a milestone in strategic technology cooperation between New Delhi and Washington.
MeitY highlighted that the government is actively supporting semiconductor research, innovation, and design by providing design tools to over 332 academic institutes and 105 startups. Furthermore, 24 startups have been approved under the Design-Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme to work on critical applications in alignment with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Announced jointly by the ISM, MeitY, and industry association SEMI, Semicon India 2026 is expected to showcase developments across the entire semiconductor value chain as the country works to establish its position in the global chip ecosystem.
