Multiplex operator PVR INOX reported that its second-quarter net profit more than doubled, supported by a robust lineup of film releases and strong box office collections.
The company announced a consolidated net profit of ₹263 crore for the quarter ended September 30, compared to ₹106 crore during the same period a year earlier. Revenue from operations rose nearly 17 percent year-on-year to ₹2,105 crore.
Financial metrics showed broad-based growth across key operational areas. Ticket sales increased nearly 18 percent year-on-year, while occupancy expanded by 170 basis points. The growth was further supported by a 14 percent rise in average ticket prices and a matching 14 percent increase in average food and beverage spend per head.
According to the company, English-language blockbusters contributed significantly to the numbers. Titles such as 'The Odyssey' and 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' generated ₹233 crore and ₹608 crore in sales respectively, driving a 23 percent year-on-year growth in gross box office collections.
Despite the strong quarterly performance, the multiplex operator and its smaller peers historically face volatile earnings due to the uneven distribution of blockbuster releases throughout the year, alongside ongoing competition from streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Looking ahead, PVR INOX stated it remains on track to open between 90 and 100 new screens in fiscal year 2027.
"The performance of PVR INOX this quarter highlights how a strong content pipeline directly impacts multiplex profitability. When major English-language blockbusters perform well, it lifts key metrics like average ticket prices, food and beverage spend, and overall occupancy. However, because theatrical earnings can be volatile due to uneven release schedules and competition from streaming platforms, sustaining this momentum requires disciplined expansion, such as the company's planned rollout of 90 to 100 new screens for fiscal year 2027." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
