Saatvik Solar Industries has inked a preliminary agreement with IPICOL to establish a massive 3.6 GW solar cell manufacturing plant in Gopalpur, Odisha, reinforcing India's renewable energy and domestic supply chain infrastructure.

NEW DELHI / BHUBANESWAR: In a major push toward domestic manufacturing and self-reliance in the renewable energy sector, Saatvik Solar Industries announced on Monday that it has signed a strategic initial pact with the Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Ltd (IPICOL). Under this agreement, the company will establish a state-of-the-art 3.6 GW Solar Cell Manufacturing facility located in Gopalpur, Odisha. This expansive project is projected to generate substantial regional employment opportunities while accelerating the development of a robust industrial manufacturing ecosystem in eastern India.

This latest development follows the company's aggressive capacity expansion strategy. Prashant Mathur, CEO of Saatvik Green Energy Limited, emphasized that the Odisha venture marks a pivotal turning point in the company's growth trajectory. With existing manufacturing lines for 2.4 GW of cells and 4 GW of modules progressing steadily toward commercial production, this new pact underscores Saatvik's long-term commitment to scaling up domestic operations, driving vertical integration, and bolstering supply chain resilience.

The upcoming 3.6 GW facility will seamlessly integrate into Saatvik Solar's broader greenfield manufacturing blueprint in Gopalpur, complementing the ongoing execution of its Phase I integrated manufacturing complex. Significant milestones have already been achieved on the Phase I front. Tool installation is advancing rapidly, positioning the facility for an imminent operational ramp-up. Furthermore, crucial electrical infrastructure milestones have been successfully crossed, headlined by the completion of a dedicated 220 kV power substation that stands ready for immediate charging.

Operational readiness is gathering momentum as manufacturing lines undergo final phases of rigorous installation, testing, and process validation. The upcoming solar cell line is slated for an accelerated ramp-up, with the critical Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM-II) inspection scheduled for September. This regulatory milestone will pave the way for full-scale commercialization and distribution across domestic and international markets.

As India aggressively chases its ambitious non-fossil energy targets of achieving 500 GW by 2030, strategic investments in domestic solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing value chains have become paramount. Initiatives like Saatvik's Gopalpur project align directly with national policies aimed at reducing import dependencies, fostering technological advancements, and positioning India as a global manufacturing powerhouse in clean energy infrastructure.

"The strategic alliance between Saatvik Solar and IPICOL for a 3.6 GW solar cell facility in Odisha marks a monumental leap for India's clean energy manufacturing landscape. As the nation rapidly transitions toward a sustainable energy ecosystem, reducing import reliance on critical components like solar cells is paramount. By investing heavily in integrated, large-scale manufacturing infrastructure in eastern India, Saatvik is not only scaling its operational capabilities but also catalyzing regional economic growth and job creation. At StartupLanes, we believe that robust domestic supply chains and vertical integration will be the primary drivers of success for India's renewable sector, and this milestone sets a commendable benchmark for the industry's future trajectory." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
