Tata Communications has announced an investment close to $450 million to develop a high-speed, low-latency AI network fabric designed to connect key AI data-centre corridors across India. The initiative involves building approximately 10,000 kilometers of new long-haul fibre, creating one of the nation's largest AI-ready connectivity networks.
Referred to as an AI super highway, the infrastructure is engineered to support next-generation AI workloads that traditional telecom networks often struggle to manage. According to Rupesh Chokshi, Chief Product and Technology Officer, Executive Vice President & Global Business Head – Network Services at Tata Communications, the network will feature direct data center-to-data center fabrics, custom SLAs, ultra-low latency, diverse routing, and a capacity of 7.2 petabytes. The entire project is funded directly through the company's operating cash flows and is built to offer 25-year asset longevity.
The execution of the fibre network is planned across a three- to five-year rollout horizon. Phase 1 will prioritize the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai route to establish direct links between key data center clusters and subsea landing hubs. Phase 2 will expand regional coverage to Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, and Chennai, while later phases will extend the network toward Bhubaneswar in the east and Gujarat—including GIFT City and Jamnagar—in the west.
The infrastructure will integrate into Tata Communications' existing footprint of over 500,000 km of subsea fibre and over 200,000 km of terrestrial fibre. Rather than serving as a captive asset, the network will operate as a commercial-grade, multi-tenant facility leased through long-term contracts to hyperscalers, neo-cloud providers, AI labs, and enterprises.
Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, MD and CEO of Tata Communications, noted that India's data centre-to-data centre connectivity market could grow into a sector exceeding $1 billion over the medium term. He stated that the expansion is increasingly supported by anchor customer commitments and contracted demand, providing a foundation for efficient capital deployment.
The investment aligns with the company's broader strategy to support accelerating cloud adoption, AI deployment, data localisation requirements, and enterprise demand for digital infrastructure. In addition to the new AI highway, Tata Communications will continue scaling its current National Long Distance and metro network footprint to support existing enterprise connectivity needs.
"This strategic infrastructure investment by Tata Communications highlights the growing demand for specialized digital architecture as artificial intelligence workloads scale across India. By funding the 10,000-kilometer fibre network entirely through operating cash flows and targeting commercial multi-tenant leases, the company is positioning itself to capture significant value from the expanding data center ecosystem. For the broader business and technology landscape, robust connectivity between key corridors will be essential to support the operational requirements of global hyperscalers and enterprises." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
