US President Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday that Venezuela could potentially become the 51st US state, citing growing oil cooperation and bilateral ties between Washington and Caracas.
Speaking to supporters at a midterm election rally in Corpus Christi, Texas, Trump addressed the evolving diplomatic and economic relationship. "I want to thank Venezuela, where our relationship has become very, very good, a great one," he stated during the address.
During the event, the US leader announced the arrival of the first 1 million barrels of free Venezuelan oil secured under an agreement between the two governments. Emphasising the strategic importance of the shipment, Trump noted that the arrangement gives the US control over a significant portion of global oil supplies. He added that the energy imports will be refined domestically in Texas, including facilities in Corpus Christi.
Highlighting ongoing economic shifts in the South American nation, Trump pointed to foreign investments creating local employment opportunities. Expanding on the deepening energy exchanges, he remarked that the country could see increased prosperity under the current trajectory.
"We're bringing out a lot of oil for ourselves, a lot. It will become a prosperous country, and who knows? Maybe someday soon it will become a prosperous 51st state. That's possible," Trump said.
Reiterating the prospective political arrangement during his speech, the US president outlined an alternative governance structure, suggesting an election for a governor instead of a president, given the nation's substantial oil reserves.
This marks the continuation of similar proposals regarding foreign territories. Earlier this year, Trump indicated he was considering bringing the South American nation into the Union as a state, echoing past remarks concerning Canada.
"Geopolitical shifts and energy agreements of this scale carry deep economic implications for global markets. Control over major oil supplies and domestic refining capabilities directly influence energy pricing and trade dynamics. Businesses operating in the energy and international trade sectors must closely monitor how these evolving bilateral relations impact supply chains and macroeconomic stability on a global scale." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
