Jio is set to make its trading debut following a record $3.2 billion initial public offering (IPO). Valued at up to $108.3 billion, the company serves more than 530 million customers and is backed by prominent global technology players including Meta and Alphabet's Google. When trading officially commences, Jio has the potential to become one of India's largest companies by market capitalisation.
This major public listing advances the broader strategic plan of Reliance Industries, Jio's parent company, to transition from a traditional oil-and-chemicals conglomerate into a diversified consumer and technology enterprise spanning multiple sectors. According to an industry source with direct knowledge of the event, the listing ceremony for Jio is expected to be attended by Akash Ambani, managing director and eldest son of Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani. Reliance Industries did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters regarding the listing.
Ahead of the official market debut, trading activity in the grey market—an unregulated space that permits investors to trade unlisted shares prior to public listing—indicated potential gains of about 22% for Jio shares. The public offering comes during a period of robust activity in India's primary markets. According to LSEG data, India has emerged as the world's busiest IPO market this year by the sheer number of deals, registering 246 listings. However, in terms of total capital raised, the country ranks fourth globally at $13.5 billion, trailing behind the United States, mainland China, and Hong Kong.
Ahead of the debut, several market brokerages have characterized Jio's $108.3 billion valuation as attractive, with some analysts noting room for potential upside. At the same time, market observers have highlighted several key risk factors that could impact future performance. These include intense market competition, requirements for heavy capital spending, and potential regulatory shifts in India's telecom sector, particularly concerning licensing rules, spectrum allocation, and associated fees.
"The market debut of Jio at a valuation of over $100 billion marks a significant milestone for the Indian corporate and technology landscape. While the backing of global giants like Meta and Google provides strong validation, investors will closely monitor capital expenditure and regulatory shifts in the telecom sector. This listing reflects the broader evolution of traditional conglomerates into technology-driven consumer ecosystems." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
