Indian benchmark indices witnessed a range-bound session on Wednesday. The BSE Sensex closed at 73,598.67, down 8.08 points or 0.01 per cent, after swinging between an intraday high of 73,762.98 and a low of 73,179.41. The NSE Nifty50 settled at 22,749.75, down 3.45 points or 0.02 per cent, following profit-booking after touching a high of 22,829.75. Bank Nifty underperformed significantly, falling 0.72 per cent to close at 53,974.90 due to pressure on private sector banking stocks. The India VIX declined 4.4 per cent to 16.53.
On the macroeconomic front, India’s average crude oil import basket price rose by nearly 4 per cent month-on-month in October, crossing the $120 per barrel mark. This increase was driven by ongoing conflict in West Asia, which heightened geopolitical uncertainty and raised marine insurance premiums and freight rates. The Indian rupee depreciated by 19 paise over the week to end at 95.12 against the US dollar, weighed down by a stronger greenback and high crude prices, though foreign portfolio inflows offered some cushion.
In the corporate sector, several companies reported financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027. Larsen & Toubro posted its highest-ever quarterly order inflow of ₹1.47 lakh crore, alongside a 33 per cent year-on-year growth in net profit to ₹5,202 crore. Maruti Suzuki reported a 26 per cent year-on-year drop in Q2 net profit due to global tensions and foreign exchange headwinds, despite achieving 26 per cent revenue growth. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) reported a consolidated net profit of 17.50 billion rupees for the quarter, compared to 4.2 billion rupees in the corresponding period last year, with revenue reaching 320 billion rupees.
Additionally, ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund launched its BSE Power ETF to provide investors exposure to power generation, transmission, distribution, and electrical equipment segments. In the fintech and digital ecosystem, crypto exchange CoinDCX reported a phishing attack days after confirming a compromised wallet incident involving $16 million in user funds from non-CoinDCX users. Meanwhile, fintech companies navigating the public markets are facing valuation and timeline reassessments amid uncertainties surrounding the merchant discount rate (MDR) and volatile equity conditions.
"The recent financial disclosures highlight a mixed corporate landscape where strong order inflows in infrastructure contrast with margin pressures caused by global forex and commodity headwinds. For businesses, especially in capital-intensive and fintech sectors, navigating currency volatility, regulatory uncertainties like MDR, and shifting capital market sentiments will require disciplined cash flow management and strategic resilience over the coming quarters." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
