Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the development of a dedicated 'Japan City' aimed at anchoring the state's expanding partnership with Japan. The initiative is designed to create a new industrial ecosystem spanning advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, data centres, and electronics.
Speaking at the UP-Japan Investment Meet 2026 in New Delhi on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Adityanath stated that the state's collaboration with Japan has moved beyond the automobile sector into emerging technology areas. Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Shivraj Singh Chouhan also attended the event.
To support incoming industrial projects, the state government highlighted its infrastructure capabilities, noting a land bank of more than 75,000 acres of dedicated industrial land and 27 manufacturing and logistics clusters along its expressway network. Adityanath pointed out that Uttar Pradesh has 36 sectoral policies covering IT and ITeS, solar power, green hydrogen, food processing, and defence infrastructure, alongside five dedicated sectoral desks to assist investments.
The announcement of Japan City coincided with ground-breaking ceremonies for major manufacturing projects. Escorts Kubota and Minda Corporation committed significant capital to new facilities in the state. Escorts Kubota is investing approximately ₹2,025 crore in a greenfield facility located in Sector-10 of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).
Shingo Hanada, President and CEO of Kubota Corporation, noted that India is transitioning from solely being a market for the company to becoming a global manufacturing and engineering hub. He added that India represents one of the largest and fastest-growing tractor markets globally, playing a key role in Kubota's 2030 growth strategy.
Additionally, Minda Corporation has proposed investments totaling ₹1,166 crore across two projects in Sector-10 and Sector-24 of YEIDA. Aakash Minda, Executive Director of Minda Corporation, stated that the new units will increase production capacity and generate local employment.
The investment meet drew participation from over 200 Japanese industrialists, CEOs, business leaders, and policymakers. Representatives from prominent companies including Toshiba India, Panasonic, Daikin Airconditioning India, Sumitomo Corporation India, Honda Trading Corporation India, and Shimizu Corporation were present. Existing Japanese operations in Uttar Pradesh include companies such as Denso, Nagase, and Seiko Advance.
"The development of a dedicated 'Japan City' alongside massive investments from established global players like Escorts Kubota and Minda Corporation signals strong institutional confidence in Uttar Pradesh's industrial infrastructure. By expanding beyond traditional automotive sectors into semiconductors, electronics, and advanced manufacturing, the state is successfully creating robust clusters supported by substantial land banks and targeted policies. This structural integration with international supply chains provides a strong foundation for long-term regional economic growth and industrial employment." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
