THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — Vizhinjam International Seaport has officially commenced full-fledged export-import (EXIM) operations, marking a transition from a transshipment hub into a commercial gateway for global trade. The launch took place 20 months after the port commenced initial commercial operations.
Chief Minister VD Satheesan flagged off export containers to mark the start of the operations. During the event, the State government also unveiled 'Mission Samudra', an initiative designed to harness Keralam's maritime potential, alongside discussions with investor groups to explore opportunities to scale up EXIM activities.
According to the state government, Vizhinjam is the first port in the country to deploy an automated, algorithm-driven system utilizing artificial intelligence. In addition, the government informed Cochin Port of its plan to acquire land required for a cruise terminal in Kochi, aiming to promote inland river tourism connecting Keralam's 44 rivers and cruise tourism linking major coastal cities.
Ashwani Gupta, CEO of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), stated that the transition to EXIM operations will provide local exporters and importers with a more direct route to international markets. Gupta noted that once supported by full road and rail connectivity, the port can emerge as a strategic gateway for the wider South Indian region.
APSEZ has invested more than ₹7,700 crore in Vizhinjam and has committed an additional ₹16,000 crore for Phase II. This upcoming phase is planned to increase the port's capacity from 1.6 million TEUs to 5.7 million TEUs.
Chief Minister Satheesan stated that the government would provide regulatory facilitation, infrastructure support, and other assistance to enable investors to expand global export activities through the port. However, the launch event was marked by the absence of key political representatives, including Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, as well as representatives from the BJP and CPI(M).
