Chinese officials have reported that 261 foreign nationals, including 49 Indians, remain unaccounted for after a severe flash flood struck the Gyirong Port border crossing between Nepal and Tibet on August 26. The missing individuals represent 23 countries, with search and cross-checking operations conducted by multiple local authorities.

Chinese officials announced on Sunday that 261 foreign nationals remain unaccounted for following a catastrophic flash flood that struck Gyirong Port, a primary border crossing between Nepal and Tibet, on August 26.

According to state-run Xinhua news agency, the update was shared during a media briefing at Gyirong. The briefing followed a joint search and cross-checking effort conducted by foreign affairs, public security, culture and tourism, and emergency management authorities.

The missing individuals comprise citizens from 23 different countries. The breakdown includes 104 people from Nepal, 49 from India, 33 from Latvia, 18 from the United States, 15 from Britain, six each from Canada and Australia, four from South Africa, three each from Malaysia, Germany, and Russia, two each from Ireland, Estonia, France, Netherlands, New Zealand, and one each from Kazakhstan, Finland, Lithuania, Portugal, Ukraine, Spain, and Hungary.

Reports indicate that a large number of Indian pilgrims were visiting Tibet to participate in the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra following recent improvements in diplomatic ties between China and India. Some of these pilgrims were reportedly present at the immigration building in Gyirong County when the flash flood hit the region.

Footage of the large flash flood submerging the immigration building has circulated globally, highlighting the severity of the natural disaster at the border crossing.

"This incident highlights the severe operational vulnerabilities and risks associated with cross-border infrastructure and travel routes in geographically volatile regions. For businesses and organizations operating or facilitating cross-border mobility and tourism, natural disasters underscore the critical need for robust emergency response frameworks, real-time communication protocols, and comprehensive risk management strategies to safeguard personnel and travelers during unforeseen crises." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
