NEW DELHI: In a strategic pivot that signals a major evolution for India's electric vehicle pioneer, Ola Electric has officially entered the clean energy storage sector. Unveiled on India's 80th Independence Day, the company introduced its ambitious 'Shakti' energy storage portfolio, designed to capture intermittent renewable energy and deploy it efficiently across residential, commercial, and utility-scale grids.
The move marks a significant diversification for the homegrown EV unicorn, leveraging its existing manufacturing infrastructure—specifically its massive Gigafactory and proprietary cell-to-system capabilities. Built around indigenous Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery technology, the Shakti architecture is designed to create a unified ecosystem that addresses power reliability challenges from individual households to national utility networks.
Commenting on the strategic expansion, Bhavish Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director, Ola Electric, noted that the applications of the company’s battery and cell technology naturally extend far beyond electric mobility. According to Aggarwal, the Shakti portfolio leverages existing supply chains and nationwide networks to deliver reliable, affordable energy storage without incurring incremental capital intensity, helping India store and utilize clean energy more intelligently.
The newly unveiled portfolio is structured into distinct tiers catering to different market segments. At the residential level, Shakti Gen2 integrates battery backup, intelligent energy management, and solar storage into a single cohesive unit. The residential line features two initial variants: a 4.6 kWh model priced at an introductory rate of ₹99,999 and a 9.2 kWh model priced at ₹1,74,999. Both variants are currently available for pre-booking at a token amount of ₹999, with commercial deliveries slated to commence in November 2026.
Moving up the commercial and infrastructure ladder, Ola Electric introduced the Shakti AC Rack and Shakti DC Rack. The AC Rack seamlessly integrates both the battery and inverter into a unified system, while the DC Rack is engineered to interface directly with compatible direct current infrastructure. Both commercial offerings feature modular designs and are scheduled for market availability starting in March 2027.
At the apex of the portfolio sits Mahashakti, a heavy-duty industrial and grid-scale storage solution. The Mahashakti Rack is engineered to handle large commercial and industrial loads, while the massive 6.26 MWh Mahashakti container is specifically built for large-scale utility projects. The underlying architecture is designed to scale dynamically from a single container deployment up to massive GWh-scale energy storage power plants.
This strategic expansion comes at a crucial time for the Indian energy landscape. As the nation accelerates its transition toward renewable energy integration, grid stabilization and energy storage have emerged as paramount business opportunities. By capitalizing on domestic manufacturing capabilities and bypassing heavy reliance on imported components, Ola Electric is positioning itself not just as a prominent EV player, but as a foundational pillar in India’s broader clean energy transition.
"Ola Electric's bold entry into the energy storage sector marks a defining moment for India's deep-tech and hardware manufacturing ecosystem. By leveraging its Gigafactory and proprietary LFP cell technology to scale solutions from residential units to GWh-grade utility containers, Ola is addressing one of the most critical bottlenecks in the renewable energy transition: efficient storage and grid stabilization. This strategic diversification proves that Indian EV pioneers are maturing into comprehensive energy conglomerates. At StartupLanes, we view this as a powerful validation of indigenous manufacturing capabilities. It creates a massive trickle-down effect for the B2B supply chain, opening up lucrative avenues for component startups, software energy-management platforms, and infrastructure partners. As India marches toward ambitious green energy targets, vertically integrated ecosystems like Ola Shakti will play a foundational role in shaping our economic and ecological future." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
