Hyderabad-based biotechnology firm Bharat Biotech has announced a nearly 40 percent price reduction for its MOSQIVAC malaria vaccine. The adjustment follows an agreement executed by UNICEF and backed by Gavi, aimed at expanding immunization access for children.

NEW DELHI: Hyderabad-based biotechnology major Bharat Biotech announced on Friday a nearly 40 percent reduction in the price of its malaria vaccine, MOSQIVAC.

The price revision is the result of an agreement executed by UNICEF and financially backed by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. According to the company, the strategic cost reduction will enable the protection of an additional one million children while generating USD 50 million in global savings.

MOSQIVAC is the brand name for the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine, originally developed by global pharmaceutical firm GSK. It holds the distinction of being the world's first malaria vaccine. Manufacturing responsibilities for the vaccine are currently handled by Bharat Biotech.

Highlighting the urgency of addressing the disease, Bharat Biotech noted that public health data indicates one child dies from malaria every minute globally. The revised pricing structure is intended to improve accessibility and accelerate distribution in regions bearing the highest burden of the disease.

"Price reductions driven by institutional agreements like those involving UNICEF and Gavi play a critical role in expanding public health interventions. For biotechnology and life sciences companies, aligning manufacturing capabilities with global procurement frameworks enables broader market reach and scalable impact. This development underscores how strategic partnerships and supply chain efficiencies can lower costs for essential medical products while addressing urgent global health challenges." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
