Stockbroker Angel One has announced the rollout of US stock investing on its application, allowing domestic investors to purchase shares of American companies and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The development follows regulatory approval from the International Financial Services Centre Authority (IFSCA) enabling registered brokers to facilitate international investments through GIFT City.
According to the company, the new facility permits Indian investors to buy equities in several US-listed corporations, including Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Netflix, Spotify, and Toyota. Additionally, the platform supports fractional shares, a feature that allows users to invest in a portion of a high-value stock rather than purchasing a complete share.
The feature is currently being deployed in a phased manner and is accessible to select users. Angel One stated that it intends to extend the service to its complete user base by mid-November.
Alongside the trading capabilities, the offering aims to educate investors on various regulatory and financial elements associated with overseas investments. This includes guidance on account activation procedures, funding processes through the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), capital gains taxation rules, and US dividend withholding tax regulations.
Market participation in global equities has seen rising interest from Indian investors who are looking to diversify their portfolios beyond domestic equities. This demand is largely driven by the appeal of exposure to global technology-led investment themes, many of which feature prominent companies listed primarily on US exchanges.
"The integration of international investing through GIFT City marks a significant step for Indian retail platforms catering to a maturing investor base. As domestic investors increasingly seek portfolio diversification and exposure to global technology leaders, features like fractional share trading and clear navigation of the Liberalised Remittance Scheme remove traditional entry barriers. Brokerages that streamline both execution and compliance education will likely see strong adoption for overseas asset classes." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
