Data backup and disaster recovery solutions provider Vembu Technologies has announced plans to scale its business in India to approximately ₹500 crore within the next five years. The Chennai-based company aims to secure a position among the top three players in the domestic market, banking on regulatory requirements that have elevated the importance of data protection for local enterprises.
Speaking on the strategic shift, CEO Sekar Vembu noted that while the company's current absolute value and India contribution remain modest at roughly 2 to 5 percent, domestic focus has intensified over the past year. Globally, North America serves as the firm's largest market, generating 50 percent of its topline, followed by Europe at 20 percent, with the remainder distributed across the Middle East, South America, and other regions. Vembu was previously part of the founding team of Zoho, which launched as AdventNet in the 1990s, before starting his own venture.
To achieve its domestic growth targets, the company plans to invest roughly ₹100 crore over the next three to five years. These funds will be directed toward ramping up pre-sales, partner acquisition, and marketing initiatives. Concurrently, the firm is transitioning globally into a 100 percent channel company, reducing its reliance on direct online sales.
In alignment with broader industry trends, Vembu Technologies is shifting its focus upmarket toward mid-market and enterprise clients, both in India and globally. According to the CEO, the proliferation of artificial intelligence in software development is lowering barriers for SMB workflow solutions, which may lead to commoditisation. Consequently, the company sees greater long-term value in serving larger enterprise clients that demand deeper domain expertise.
Industry estimates place the enterprise-grade backup and disaster recovery sector between ₹5,000 crore and ₹9,000 crore, growing at an annual rate of 15 to 20 percent. Vembu highlighted that a key product differentiator for the company is its integration of agentic features at a standard affordable price, avoiding multiple licensing contracts for client add-ons.
"Vembu Technologies' strategic pivot toward the Indian market is timely, especially given the strict compliance requirements introduced by the Digital Personal Data Protection regulations. By committing capital to build robust channel partner networks and targeting mid-market to enterprise clients, the company is positioning itself to capture a larger share of a growing domestic sector. Moving upmarket where domain expertise is critical helps software companies protect their margins against broader commoditisation trends." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
