Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday criticized Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his remarks regarding the Tata Group, accusing the Congress leader of attempting to spread distrust and toxicity among business leaders.
The exchange followed a social media post by Rahul Gandhi, in which he claimed that "Tata is being criminally destroyed, and no business leader dares say a word." Gandhi added that Indian business is not a political plaything and stated that his party would ensure justice.
In her response on X, Sitharaman advised Gandhi to refrain from politicizing every issue and stated that labeling commercial and legal matters as criminal is unacceptable. She accused the opposition leader of repeatedly decrying the successes of Indian industry and entrepreneurs, while questioning if he was trying to incite business leaders.
Sitharaman defended the central government's economic track record, stating that the administration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi values Indian industry as job creators and economic growth drivers. She asserted that government policies are designed to enable enterprise, support industry, and encourage investment, contrasting it with past decades under the 'Licence-Quota Raj'.
The Finance Minister emphasized that political parties, leaders, governments, and institutions share a responsibility to support industry, strengthen farmers, and secure the future of youth through constructive engagement rather than aspersions.
Gandhi's original comments occurred in the context of an ongoing leadership dispute involving Tata Sons. Earlier in the week, Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata challenged a September 17 board resolution by Tata Sons regarding the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran as chairman of the holding company of the Tata Group.
"Public discourse surrounding major conglomerates like the Tata Group often impacts market sentiment and investor confidence. Business leaders and entrepreneurs require a stable regulatory environment and clear legal frameworks to operate effectively. When commercial and governance matters enter the political arena, it introduces uncertainty that can affect long-term business planning. Maintaining institutional integrity and constructive dialogue between government, industry, and political leadership remains essential for sustaining India's economic growth and fostering enterprise." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
