India has the potential to build a $55 trillion economy by the year 2047 by capitalizing on its young demographic in artificial intelligence and dominating key sunrise sectors. This projection was shared by former Chief Economic Adviser Krishnamurthy V Subramanian while addressing the 'India 2047 Leaders TALK' event.
According to Subramanian, achieving this milestone requires a sustained 8 per cent real GDP growth coupled with strategic capital deployment. This combination is expected to unlock compounding value across the country's core economic pillars. He emphasized that building a $55 trillion 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047 is an achievable reality driven by compounding growth, ethical wealth creation, and bold structural policy.
The former CEA highlighted several critical areas necessary for this economic expansion. These include attracting high-quality Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), expanding world-class electronics and industrial manufacturing through global value chain integrations, and cultivating a hyper-skilled young talent pool proficient in artificial intelligence.
Subramanian noted that by expanding high-value manufacturing and establishing global dominance in sunrise sectors such as space and defense technology, India can deliver a resilient economic blueprint for the modern world. He specifically pointed to high-barrier frontier industries—including defense manufacturing, dual-use technology transfer, and commercial space tech—as vital catalysts for technological self-reliance, national defense capabilities, and high-value export growth.
Contextualizing India's current economic standing, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) noted in its World Economic Outlook for April 2026 that India's nominal GDP stands at $3.92 trillion for 2025-26, positioning the country as the sixth-largest economy globally. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has projected that the Indian economy will grow at 6.7 per cent in the current financial year. This growth is supported by domestic demand, manufacturing, services activity, and strong exports, despite global uncertainties stemming from trade tensions and the West Asia conflict.
"Reaching a $55 trillion economy by 2047 is an ambitious yet grounded vision that highlights the critical role of technology and structural growth in India. For entrepreneurs and the broader startup ecosystem, this trajectory underscores the immense potential in sunrise sectors like artificial intelligence, space tech, and defense manufacturing. As India integrates deeper into global value chains and attracts high-quality investments, businesses must align their long-term strategies with these high-barrier, high-value frontier industries to drive sustainable growth and technological self-reliance." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
