The Indian economy continues to display strength, characterized by buoyant domestic demand, rising manufacturing, and services activity, notwithstanding headwinds arising from a fragile geopolitical environment and continuing trade-related uncertainties, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) latest monthly bulletin.

In the 'State of the Economy' report published in the central bank's monthly bulletin, RBI officials noted that the global economic outlook continues to be shaped by geopolitical frictions in West Asia and fresh tariffs by the United States. Despite these risks to global trade and the growth-inflation matrix, India's robust macroeconomic fundamentals continue to provide a cushion to the domestic economy.

The momentum observed in the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year continued into July. Most high-frequency indicators reflected sustained manufacturing and services activity, alongside double-digit expansion in merchandise exports and imports. Domestic demand remained buoyant, supported by indicators such as vehicle and tractor sales. Furthermore, petroleum product consumption growth returned to positive territory following three straight months of contraction.

Industrial production strengthened sharply in June, recording its strongest growth in nearly two years, backed by a broad-based acceleration in manufacturing. The services sector also exhibited resilience. Merchandise exports and imports grew strongly at 19.6 per cent and 17.5 per cent year-on-year respectively in July 2026, with exports reaching a four-month high for the fiscal year so far. However, the merchandise trade deficit widened both sequentially and on a year-on-year basis, largely reflecting a widening deficit in electronic goods.

The central bank officials noted that the recovery of the southwest monsoon in July helped kharif sowing reach closer to normal acreage, mitigating some potential risks to the agriculture sector. Meanwhile, headline consumer price index (CPI) inflation edged up above target to 4.4 per cent in June 2026 after remaining below target for 16 consecutive months. Officials observed that this increase was primarily driven by supply-side pressures, while stable core inflation reaffirmed a lower pass-through of cost pressures.

Financial conditions during this period were characterized by high credit growth of 19.3 per cent year-on-year as of July 31, 2026. The economy also maintained comfortable liquidity and softening government security (G-Sec) yields, supported by a rebound in capital inflows.

"The latest RBI bulletin highlights the underlying resilience of the Indian economy, which continues to grow despite external pressures and global trade uncertainties. For entrepreneurs and investors operating in the Indian startup ecosystem, strong domestic demand, high credit growth, and robust manufacturing activity present a stable foundation for business expansion. While supply-side inflation and geopolitical headwinds require careful monitoring, the macroeconomic fundamentals continue to offer a favorable environment for long-term business planning and capital deployment." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
