Jio Platforms Ltd’s stock market debut has propelled the digital company and its parent entity, Reliance Industries Ltd, to the top of India's corporate rankings. The listing helped Mukesh Ambani’s conglomerate overtake the Tata Group as India’s largest conglomerate by market value.
On its first day of trading, Jio’s shares rose as much as 23 percent, giving the company a valuation of more than ₹12.5 lakh crore ($131.4 billion). According to data compiled by Bloomberg News, this surge pushed the Reliance Group’s combined market value past ₹30 lakh crore, surpassing the Tata Group's valuation of ₹25 lakh crore. Data shows that the Tata Group had maintained the top position by market value for the majority of the past decade.
Following the listing—which marks India’s largest IPO—Jio also overtook its nearest domestic sector rival, Bharti Airtel Ltd, to become the sixth-most valuable telecom firm globally. Domestically, Jio is now the second-most valuable company by the same metric, trailing only its parent company, Reliance.
Akash Ambani has stated an intention to take Jio to greater heights, aiming to democratize new technology and space connectivity over the next ten years. Meanwhile, Shankar Sharma, Founder of GQuant Investech, noted that a major listing of this scale has the potential to alter the investment sentiment within the country.
Despite the successful debut, Reliance’s shares have experienced a decline of 25.4 percent over the course of the year, while the benchmark NSE Nifty 50 has slipped by nearly 13.3 percent.
Additionally, the newly listed telecom giant will have to wait several months before it can be added to India’s headline stock indexes, such as the Nifty 50. Stock exchanges must first launch derivatives products on the stock before it becomes eligible for inclusion in these benchmark indexes.
"The market debut of Jio Platforms is a significant milestone for the Indian capital markets and corporate landscape. Surpassing a major valuation threshold through India's largest IPO demonstrates the immense scale and investor appetite for large-scale digital and telecom businesses. However, as the company enters public markets alongside a broader market correction for its parent entity, sustained long-term value creation will depend on executing its growth roadmap in new technologies and connectivity over the coming decade." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
