Major consumer goods and food companies, including Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, Nestle, and Reckitt, have announced that further price increases are likely next year. The move comes as rising energy, raw material, and freight costs driven by the US war on Iran continue to squeeze profit margins, even as shoppers show resistance to higher grocery bills.

Global consumer goods and food companies have warned of additional price hikes next year to cover rising operating costs. Major corporations including Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, Nestle, and Reckitt face a balancing act to protect profit margins as shoppers remain reluctant to spend more on everyday groceries.

Higher energy, raw material, and freight costs resulting from the US war on Iran have increased the cost of manufacturing everything from laundry detergent to soda and snacks. These rising expenses threaten to keep inflation persistent into the upcoming year, adding to high household gas and grocery bills.

The soaring costs represent a fresh challenge for companies that have already struggled with sluggish sales since the pandemic, as consumers balk at increasingly expensive name-brand packaged goods. Last year, these firms also contended with imported goods tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

David Wagner, Head of Equity and Portfolio Manager at PepsiCo investor Aptus Capital Advisors, noted that pricing remains the last lever available to these companies, even as consumers are already tapped out on paying higher prices.

Corporate executives point to elevated cost pressures driven by logistics and transportation expenses. On Tuesday, Coca-Cola CEO Henrique Braun stated that pressure on consumers could extend into 2027 as the company raised its annual profit forecast. Similarly, Reckitt CEO Kris Licht reported that European and North American consumers are particularly squeezed, leading the Durex maker to trim its annual revenue forecast and send its shares down by around 5 percent.

Procter & Gamble CFO Andre Schulten noted that the Tide detergent maker recently hiked its expected profit hit from rising raw material, energy, and freight costs to $1.4 billion from $1 billion. According to Schulten, the broader industry has no alternative way to recover commodity pressure except through pricing.

Companies now face the delicate challenge of determining how high prices can rise before shoppers stop purchasing entirely. Lindt & Sprüngli recently replaced its CEO after struggling with consumer response to price increases, highlighting the risks of pushing prices too high.

Nestle CFO Anna Manz indicated that while sales volumes can dip in the short term when prices rise, the company will implement pricing only to the extent possible without damaging medium-term consumer penetration. Meanwhile, PepsiCo has fluctuated between price increases and cuts this year to address sluggish sales, resulting in margin hits during the previous quarter.

"This situation highlights a critical business challenge: when external macroeconomic factors like geopolitical conflicts drive up input costs, companies find themselves caught between shrinking margins and consumer fatigue. Passing costs entirely to the customer risks alienating an already price-sensitive market, while absorbing them damages profitability. Business leaders must focus on operational efficiency and supply chain optimization rather than relying solely on pricing adjustments to sustain long-term growth in volatile economic environments." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
