The INDIA opposition bloc has finalized the official residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at 10, Rajaji Marg as the new venue for its planned 'public impeachment' of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The event is scheduled to take place on October 30.
The change in venue comes after the Congress party reported that it was denied permissions to host the event at other locations. According to Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal, the government-run Ashok Hotel initially granted permission to host the gathering but later withdrew it following police intervention. The party subsequently sought to hold the event at the Ramlila Maidan, where it had booked space from October 25 to November 3, but stated that police stopped infrastructure construction at the site on Tuesday.
Venugopal alleged that the restrictions on venue permissions were ordered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to protect CEC Kumar and suppress criticism. The Congress leadership maintained that the opposition alliance of 21 parties intends to proceed with the October 30 event as a curtain-raiser for a larger mega rally planned at the Ramlila Maidan on November 1.
The 'public impeachment' and the upcoming November rally form part of a broader series of protests organized by the Congress and allied opposition parties. The demonstrations center on demands for the resignation of CEC Kumar over SIR and alleged electoral irregularities, with opposition leaders asserting that they will continue their protests despite administrative hurdles.
