Indian automotive companies registered notable year-on-year sales growth in August, driven by steady demand across vehicle portfolios ahead of the upcoming festive season.
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), India's largest multi-utility vehicles maker, announced that its total vehicle sales rose 42 percent year-on-year to 1,07,648 units in August. Specifically, the company sold 59,257 sports utility vehicles (SUVs) during the month, marking a 50 percent increase compared to the 39,399 units sold in August of the previous year.
Velusamy R, President of the Automotive Business at M&M, noted that demand remains robust across the company's portfolio. According to the company, recent updates to models like the Scorpio-N and the reception of the BE 6 SPORTEQ have contributed to the market response. M&M indicated it expects this momentum to continue through the festive season.
Meanwhile, JSW MG Motor India reported a 14 percent year-on-year growth in August 2026, registering wholesale dispatches of 7,508 units to dealers. During the month, the company introduced the MG Hector Tomahawk. Built on ADAPT—described as India's first Multi-New Energy Vehicle platform—the new SUV is offered in both electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain options to provide varied mobility choices for consumers.
In the two-wheeler segment, Bajaj Auto also reported positive growth for the month. The company dispatched 2,01,898 units in August, representing a 10 percent increase compared to the 1,84,109 units dispatched in August 2025.
"The double-digit sales growth reported by major automotive players in August reflects steady consumer demand and positive market sentiment heading into the festive season. The emphasis on expanding utility vehicle portfolios and introducing new energy powertrain options indicates how traditional manufacturing sectors are adapting to evolving consumer preferences. For businesses operating within the broader automotive and supply chain ecosystem, these early indicators point toward a strong operational quarter." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
