NASA Astronauts Report on Life Aboard the International Space Station

NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, currently living and working aboard the International Space Station (ISS), recently discussed their experiences in orbit during an interview with The Associated Press. The astronauts noted that while the space station's position limited their view to a partial eclipse during last week's solar event, they anticipate observing the upcoming lunar eclipse.

According to Meir, the station commander, the most notable cosmic sights from orbit are the northern and southern lights. Increased solar activity has produced more intense auroras. Meir described witnessing a particularly large plasma blast from the sun that created a green aurora directly beneath the spacecraft, reflecting off the exterior of the station.

Beyond scientific and observational duties, the crew engages in various recreational activities. Meir brought a piccolo to orbit, recently performing a prerecorded piece with the Boston Pops, and participated in an onboard cooking segment. Crewmate Anil Menon, who arrived last month in a Russian capsule, has also initiated a cooking series on the station. Hathaway reported that the crew maintains a busy schedule with ongoing tasks, supplemented by weekend recreational activities such as music and karaoke.

The current international crew includes three Americans, three Russians, and one French astronaut. Meir, a marine biologist, and Hathaway, a Navy captain, launched to the station in February. They are scheduled to return to Earth via a SpaceX vehicle once their replacement crew arrives next month.
