The Nifty 50 began the trading session almost flat at 24,078 compared to the previous close of 24,080. Following the opening, the index slipped and was trading around the 24,030 mark, reflecting a decline of 0.2 per cent.
Market breadth indicated a bearish bias, with the advance-decline ratio for the Nifty 50 standing at 20 advances against 30 declines. Among individual constituents, Adani Ports led the gainers with a 3.7 per cent increase, followed by Bharti Airtel up 2.7 per cent. On the losing side, Shriram Finance dropped 3.7 per cent and InterGlobe Aviation fell 3.4 per cent.
Sectoral performance presented a mixed picture. The Nifty Auto index emerged as the top gainer with a 0.6 per cent increase, while the Nifty Realty index was the weakest performer, recording a 2.2 per cent decline. Overall, the Nifty 50 chart maintains a bearish inclination, though it continues to trade above the 24,000 support level, which is considered critical for the trajectory of the next market trend.
Meanwhile, the September expiry Nifty futures opened lower at 24,200 compared to the previous close of 24,251. The contract subsequently traded at 24,160, down by approximately 0.4 per cent.
Technical indicators show that Nifty futures have a support level at 24,150. If this threshold is breached, market watchers note the potential for a quick decline toward 24,000, with a subsequent break below 24,000 potentially dragging the contract down to 23,800. Conversely, if the futures contract rebounds from the 24,150 support level, it could rise toward the 24,300 resistance level, and a breakout past that could lift the contract to 24,500.
Given the current price action, the September futures maintain a bearish inclination, suggesting a higher likelihood of a downward movement. Market participants tracking intraday strategies have noted specific technical parameters, including selling if the support at 24,150 is breached, with defined targets and stop-loss levels.
"Market movements around key psychological levels like 24,000 require careful risk management from traders and investors alike. While short-term technical indicators suggest a bearish bias and highlight crucial support tests, businesses and market participants must maintain a long-term strategic focus rather than reacting solely to intraday fluctuations." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
