State-owned power major NTPC Limited plans to expand its installed power generation capacity to 149 gigawatts by 2032 by adding approximately 58 gigawatts. The expansion strategy includes a focus on renewable energy and a targeted 30 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2037.

State-owned power major NTPC Limited has announced plans to increase its installed power generation capacity to 149 gigawatts (GW) by the year 2032. According to Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh, the company will add around 58 GW to its existing operational capacity of 91 GW.

Speaking at the KPMG ENRich 2026 event in New Delhi, Singh outlined that the upcoming capacity additions will draw from various energy sources, including renewable energy. The expansion is aimed at strengthening the company's generation portfolio while meeting India's rapidly growing electricity demand.

As part of its long-term energy strategy, NTPC is accelerating its footprint in the nuclear energy sector. The company is targeting approximately 30 GW of nuclear power capacity as part of a broader roadmap extending toward 2037. Out of a total 250 GW capacity targeted for the year 2037, about 30 GW is planned to come from nuclear sources.

Supporting these nuclear ambitions, NTPC has already completed feasibility studies for proposed nuclear power projects in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha. The utility is additionally exploring potential locations in other states for future capacity development. These steps align with the ongoing need to diversify India's energy mix through the adoption of renewable and non-fossil fuel sources.

Commenting on the broader domestic power sector, Singh noted that India has maintained resilience in managing energy prices despite global geopolitical and economic uncertainties. He highlighted that unlike other parts of the world, India has avoided severe energy price surges. Furthermore, domestic electricity demand has seen consistent month-over-month growth, registering a 21 percent rise in October alone.

NTPC's capital expenditure and capacity addition roadmap are expected to play a central role in fulfilling India's future energy requirements and supporting the nation's transition toward a sustainable generation mix.

"NTPC's strategic roadmap to scale its capacity to 149 GW by 2032, alongside its long-term target of 30 GW in nuclear power by 2037, highlights the critical alignment between state-led infrastructure growth and India's rising energy demands. As electricity consumption continues to climb month-on-month, large-scale diversification into non-fossil and renewable sources provides long-term stability and resilience for the domestic power sector against global economic volatility." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
