India and the United Kingdom held discussions at the India-UK Joint Consultative Committee meeting to strengthen cooperation in Alternative Dispute Resolution, focusing on mediation, arbitration, and legal capacity building.

India and the United Kingdom discussed strengthening cooperation in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), including mediation and arbitration, at the India-UK Joint Consultative Committee meeting on Tuesday, according to the law ministry.

The Indian delegation was led by Law Secretary Rajiv Mani, while the UK delegation was headed by Jo Farrar, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice.

During the meeting, ADR mechanisms featured prominently in the discussions. Both sides exchanged views on the growing role of mediation and the evolving arbitration ecosystem in delivering efficient and cost-effective dispute resolution, the ministry stated in a social media post.

The two delegations also shared perspectives on the functioning of tribunals and the role of ministry officials in supporting legal and administrative processes within their respective jurisdictions.

Recognising the importance of capacity building and knowledge exchange in the legal sector, India and the UK agreed to explore opportunities for the exchange of academicians and legal practitioners. The proposed collaboration aims to facilitate training programmes, promote mutual learning, and strengthen institutional cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting reflected the shared commitment of India and the UK to enhancing legal cooperation and promoting modern, accessible, and effective dispute resolution mechanisms, the ministry added.

"Strengthening Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms like mediation and arbitration is a crucial step for improving the ease of doing business between India and the United Kingdom. As cross-border commercial ties grow, having efficient, cost-effective, and reliable legal frameworks helps reduce friction for businesses and investors operating in both jurisdictions. Collaborative capacity building and knowledge exchange between legal practitioners will further align institutional standards." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
