Markets regulator SEBI has signed an MoU with the Digital India BHASHINI division to utilize its language translation tools. The partnership aims to provide regulatory services in regional languages and enhance BHASHINI's language models with securities market terminology.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Digital India BHASHINI division (DIBD) to facilitate access to its services in regional languages.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday by SEBI’s Whole-Time Member Sandip Pradhan and DIBD Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Nag, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations. The arrangement came into force on the same day.

Under the partnership, SEBI will leverage BHASHINI's suite of language translation APIs, models, and tools. These include automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech capabilities, machine translation, and optical character recognition.

Additionally, the collaboration involves working on BHASHINI's language models to enhance them with specific securities market-related terminology.

The Digital India BHASHINI Division functions as an independent division under the aegis of the Digital India Corporation, a Section 8 not-for-profit company established by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

"The integration of regional language tools into regulatory frameworks is a necessary step for broadening market participation. By adopting BHASHINI's translation APIs and speech recognition models, SEBI is addressing language barriers that often limit public engagement with the securities market. Furthermore, incorporating specialized market terminology into these translation models ensures greater accuracy and accessibility for citizens engaging with financial services across different linguistic regions." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
