Homegrown pharmaceutical major Lupin on Wednesday reported a 22.19 percent decline in consolidated net profit to ₹1,155.30 crore for the September quarter. According to a regulatory filing by the company, the bottom line was dragged down by an exceptional item during the quarter under review.
In the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year, Lupin had posted a net profit of ₹1,484.83 crore. For the half-year period ended September 30, 2026, the company's net profit declined 4.95 percent to ₹2,572.28 crore, compared to ₹2,706.29 crore recorded in the same period a year earlier.
The financial impact during the six-month period included a settlement by Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc USA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the group. The subsidiary settled one of its ongoing antitrust matters for ₹316.28 crore ($35.8 million) without admission of liability or wrongdoing. The drugmaker noted in the filing that the group continues to carry the remaining provision towards future settlements related to similar cases.
Despite the dip in net profit, Lupin's revenue from operations for the September quarter increased to ₹7,827.26 crore, compared to ₹7,047.51 crore in the year-ago period. However, total expenses also saw an upward movement, rising to ₹6,374.46 crore during the quarter from ₹5,130.54 crore in the corresponding period last year.
Geographically, the company experienced positive momentum in key markets. US sales during the September quarter reached ₹3,020.2 crore, marking a 9.3 percent increase compared to ₹2,762.4 crore recorded a year earlier. Citing data from IQVIA for the quarter ended September 2026, the release noted that Lupin maintains its position as the third-largest pharmaceutical player in both the US generic market and the overall US market by prescriptions.
Domestically, India sales for the second quarter of FY27 stood at ₹2,383.6 crore, registering a 14.7 percent growth compared to ₹2,077.7 crore in Q2 FY26. Domestic sales accounted for 31 percent of Lupin's total global sales during the quarter.
Commenting on the performance, Lupin Managing Director Nilesh Gupta said the company delivered a strong first half of FY27, backed by solid growth across key markets and sustained profitability. He added that while the management remains mindful of near-term challenges, the firm remains confident in its long-term growth prospects, supported by portfolio strength, ongoing investments in R&D and commercial capabilities, and a focus on disciplined execution.
"Lupin's latest financial results highlight the complex nature of managing global pharmaceutical operations, where strong operational revenue and core market growth can be temporarily offset by exceptional legal and regulatory expenses. While legal provisions like antitrust settlements impact short-term bottom lines, the company's steady top-line expansion in both the US and domestic markets demonstrates underlying business resilience. For growing enterprises, this serves as a reminder that maintaining robust compliance reserves while continuing R&D investments is critical for navigating international markets successfully." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
